Surviving the Last Month of Pregnancy

After making it through the first eight months of pregnancy, making it through the last month of pregnancy can be a bit of a challenge. Not only are there some final discomforts, but time seems to stand still as you wait for the arrival of your bundle of joy.

If you thought you put on weight quickly throughout your pregnancy, you’re more than likely in for a surprise during this last month. Expect to gain at least a pound a week as the baby plumps up in preparation for birth.

This extra fat on the baby helps regulate its body temperature after being born. Extra weight causes extra strain to your body, so be ready for aching and sore joints.

A positive change will be when you experience what is called lightening. This is when the baby starts to decend into your pelvis and creates more room in your upper abdomen.

This additional room will allow you to breathe easier as the pressure on the lungs and diaphram is lessened. On the other hand, you may feel more pressure on your bladder and vaginal area.

Now, if you find that time is starting to slow down for you, try to get your final preparations done to pass the time. You should make sure the nursery is set up, clothes are washed and your labor bag is ready to go.

Absolute essentials for your labor bag include chap stick, clothes for you and the baby to go home in, your camera and a phone (with phone numbers programed) to contact everyone after the baby is born. You may want to include other items to keep yourself comfortable in labor, but realize that you probably won’t use half of what you bring.

And lastly, make sure you get plenty of rest in your last month of pregnancy. It’s easy to get caught up with all the preparations and cleaning (especially if you’re nesting), but realize this is the last chance you’ll get to sleep through the night if this is your first baby.

You’ll also need plenty of energy to make it through labor and delivery, and since you never know when labor will happen, it’s best to stay rested at all times.

The last month of pregnancy is definitely an exciting time. You have your final preparations to make and then it’s time to wait for the arrival of your new little baby. Make sure to be prepared for the changes your body will start to go through and get plenty of rest.
